Welcome

Perhaps your doctor has referred you to me, or you heard about my teaching at UCLA or my textbook on LASIK, or perhaps one of your friends told you about how my surgery restored their vision, and you would like to enjoy clear sight yourself. I understand what you're going through since I have had laser eye surgery myself. It has given me a tremendous sense of freedom and confidence to enjoy social and athletic activities that I just didn't feel comfortable to do with glasses like sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, dancing and even acting.

"Quick and painless. Great quality of care provided by Dr. Smith and staff. Thanks!"

John Orrellana
Choosing a surgeon is the most important step toward improving your vision. You need a surgeon you can trust to help you make the choices that are just right for you--even if it may be to hold off on surgery. While most patients are good candidates for LASIK, I am sometimes the first to diagnose an urgent sight threatening condition like glaucoma, cataract or diabetes during your eye examination, and I take as much pride in counseling patients against surgery as I do of the patients that I have operated upon.

My international volunteer efforts have made me gratefully aware that in the United States conditions like diabetes, cataract and glaucoma are treatable. As a volunteer surgeon for the Flying Samaritans, I have served in disadvantaged areas where these conditions are a cause of blindness. During a recent surgical expedition that I directed in Mexico, I took care of a 36-year-old farm worker with advanced cataracts that had been neglected for years.

After the surgery, he was able to see the expression on his wife's face and his son's face for the first time in years. The wife, son and father were filled with joy beyond words. I feel truly blessed to have the knowledge and skills to restore sight and make such a positive impact in people's lives.

Excellence in eye care is what I'm about. I have authored a textbook on LASIK and numerous articles on LASIK and other sight restoring procedures, and I was one of the first ophthalmologists in California to perform LASIK
in 1996. I am also one of the first to perform the new wavefront customized procedure.

Most importantly I have found that listening to my patients is as important as the surgical skills that I possess. No two patients have the same visual goals and each person has their own dreams of what they would like to do with great vision. How would your life be better if you would have clear sight?

Imagine the possibilities…and see what you've been missing.

I welcome the opportunity to serve you,

Ronald Smith, MD, MPH
